HMRC is committed to helping businesses through COVID-19. We want to ensure our mid-sized businesses are aware of what help is available to them and ways in which they can contact HMRC.

HMRC defines a mid-sized business as a business with:

  • A UK turnover of over £10million and/or
  • 20 or more employees
  • that does not fall within Large Business

We recognise that mid-sized businesses are a diverse population ranging from complex groups of companies to relatively simple organisations and that through better tailored services we can support your needs.

We understand that there may be occasions where you are unable to resolve your query using our online services or via the standard HMRC helplines. In these circumstances, please contact the Customer Engagement team for mid-sized business who will help deal with your query or direct you to someone who can.

How to access support from the Customer Engagement Team

Get help with a tax issue as a mid-sized business

You’ll need:

  • A Government Gateway user ID and password - if you do not have one, you can create one when you apply
  • Your business’s contact details - including name, correspondence address
  • Your unique taxpayer reference (known as a ‘UTR’), VAT registration number or employer PAYE reference
  • Details of your business’s annual turnover and number of employees
  • You or your representative’s contact details

If you want to provide documents to support your application,they’ll need to be less than 5MB each and in a commonly used format, like PDF, JPEG or DOCX.

Growth Support Service

Whilst a number of businesses will be impacted negatively by the effects of COVID-19, there will be some businesses who will experience growth during these times. Through our Growth Support Service we offer these businesses a named contact who will work with you as you go through these growth events, providing you with the necessary support to get your tax right.
