  • RE: Mechanism for paying class 2 NI contributions from abroad

Hi Mike, I applied online on 9 March and received a letter dated 3 April (which took a month to arrive - the Australian postal system isn't quick!). My wife applied on 10 March and hasn't received a response yet.

Dear HMRC, Thank you for answering my questions above. I sorry, I have one more question please: I understand that Barclays Bank may charge a fee for receiving international payments . Do I need to add the fee to what I pay or does Barclays Bank waive the fee for HMRC? Thank you again for your help  .

  • RE: Mechanism for paying class 2 NI contributions from abroad

Hello, After submitting an online application to pay voluntary class 2 NI contributions I received a very quick (about 6 weeks) letter from HMRC confirming that I can pay class 2 contributions and giving details of the gaps that I can pay to fill. Thank you for such a quick response - the online application process was great! The letter says I can find information about how to pay by going to www.gov.uk/pay-voluntary-class-2-national-insurance. When I go to that page I find the following information: Paying from an overseas bank account You can pay from an overseas account if you live or work abroad temporarily. --------------------- Use the following details: account number (IBAN) - GB49 BARC 2020 4830 9447 93 Bank Identifier Code (BIC) - BARCGB22 account name - HMRC NIC receipts There’s a different way to pay Class 2 National Insurance if you live or work abroad permanently. ---------------------- (the last line is linked to a page telling me to submit an application, which is the process I've just been through) I've added the underlining of the words "temporarily" and "permanently". I have two questions please: 1. I am currently living in Australia and am unsure if I will return to the UK, hence I am unsure if I am living overseas temporarily or permanently. Am I OK to pay via the bank account details above (with the reference of my NI number + IC + my surname and initial)? 2. When I check the gaps in my national insurance record online the amount it says I need to pay to fill the gaps is much higher than the amounts specified in the letter from HMRC. The amounts specified online don't seem to correspond to the class 2 contributions. Is this a problem or will this be noticed when my payment is processed and the lower rate specified in the letter applied? Thank you for your help.
