I have read it is possible to claim 5% of my total income as tax deductable expense for necessary equipment and office hire etc. I have worked from home for the last several years within an umbrella company for an end client. The end client office is too far from my home to commute (2hrs travel door to door). I would like to hire a local office, share the energy and networking with other local business and claim this as tax deductable expense within the limits of my IR35 gross income. My umbrella company says it does not support this. Are they right or wrong? And if it is not possible who can I raise this with as an improvement on IR35 legislation?
Since a lot more people are working from home now post Covid lockdowns, it is arguable that this is leading to a crisis of reduced production, depression, pressure on single use energy from homes. This is a time of inflation and a post Brexit need to restore the British sterling, Given that Britain has a large workforce in office based work, to work in a local - more reachable commute, it seems like a reasonable ask to claim for these expenses, and promote shared energy usage.
