High income child benefit question
Hi all, I have just received a letter to say I might need to pay this. Our circumstances: I rent my home. I have an income that is over £60000. My daughter is 25 years old and claims child benefit for her 5 year old son. They reside with me. My daughter is a full time independent university student. As we arnt financially linked, and I do not contribute towards his upkeep, I am unclear if this change applies. I didn't even know it existed as its not me claiming anything! The rules state: you or your partner get Child Benefit someone else gets Child Benefit for a child living with you and they contribute at least an equal amount towards the child’s upkeep So neither myself nor my partner - as I don't have one - receive child benefit. My query is that it seems to say that I am in some way contributing to my Grandsons upkeep - which I do not - thus she must be contributing at least the same. If I'm not responsible for contributing anything to his upkeep then how can I be responsible for this payment back? She pays rent to live here for both her and her son and also buys her own food etc and takes care of my Grandsons needs. We are not financially linked, I'm just helping out with childcare whilst she is at university. Any ideas on what this means and if we are liable or if we would be excluded? I've never had to do self assessment but do believe we would be liable to pay the whole year back as I did a lot of extra shifts that year. I won't have to pay this year as my income will be under £60000
