  • Tax on cost of a professional qualification requested by employer

    Hi, I am currently working on my university outplacement year for a large multi national who has outsourced employment contracts for their interns to a global recruitment and employment agency who pay the salaries on behalf of their client. The company has requested me to enrol for a course and has agreed to pay the cost. I have incurred the cost and submitted a claim for the expense to the outsourced employment agency. They have deducted tax on these expenses and when I pointed this out requesting the expenses to be paid nett of tax, I was told to contact HMRC. Can you provide confirmation from HMRC whether the employment agency should have deducted tax for an employment expense incurred at the request of my employer, and what I should do next.
