RE: Late Self Assessment penalty but never been self employed.
Hi, I spoke to an adviser as I was sent a demand close to £3000 as I was apparently registered as self employed in 2020. I was not self employed at all and had absolutely no notification of this. It has been agreed this was an error after speaking to an advisor and they have stated they will investigate this for me and to ignore letters demanding payment as this is being resolved but I am now getting letters saying that hmrc will change my tax code and directly deduct the money. There is no mention of how much or when the money will be taken. This is making me sick with worry as I have been in contact and have tried to resolve this mistake but I am still receiving these letters which are quite frankly incredibly distressing. It has been agreed this is a mistake and I don't owe this. I can't afford for unspecified amounts to just be taken from my pay for a bill that I don’t even owe. The lady I spoke to before was incredibly kind and helpful but I really need support on this urgently and can't afford to be spending over 55 minutes on hold everytime this happens. I would really appreciate it if someone could advise me on whether to ignore this latest letter or not.
