Online and Paper Self assessment filing
Hello, we posted a self assessment return for my wife several days before October 31st 2024 which included only income on the foreign pages. A few days after the return was posted my wife's HMRC account was verified and she now has an online HMRC account. Is there any advantage to now filing the same return online? Does it create any issues if we do that or are the details of the paper return entered to her account by HMRC? Thank you. -
Question re: SA 106 Foreign pages F2 and F3
Hello, On Page F2 of my self assessment return I have entered. Foreign Interest. Foreign dividends and Foreign pension. Had no other income. The foreign pension had US income taxes withheld at source and I entered that amount in Column C of Page F2. Do I need to add or transfer anything onto page F3? The Foreign notes are not clear to me. Also is the amount of tax withheld credited against the UK tax liability or deducted from the taxable amount of income? First time filing self assessment so want to ensure I enter everything as I should. Thank you. This forum has been really helpful navigating this process. -
Regarding the April 2025 deadline for paying missing years
Hello, I finally submitted a CF83 form on line and received a confirmation reference number. I posted my original request 11 months ago and have had no reply. My account tells me to expect a response to my online submission by Feb 9th 2025. My question is, how will I be able to get my eligible 12 missing years paid up before the deadline? Bit concerned if they require more information etc. Thank you. -
How to file online self assessment with NI number under maiden name
Hello. This will be our first year filing self assessment after moving to UK from USA. My wife applied for and received a UTR. In order to set up an online Gateway account it appeared that a NI number was needed, so she then applied for a new NI number even though she is retired and will not work. The response we received showed that she already had a NI number under her maiden name when she had lived in the UK 40+ years ago. The number is in the process of being updated to her current married name. When we try to set up an online account for her and enter the NI number we get an alert saying it does not match their records. All income is US pension and above the personal tax allowance. My question is, Is there a way to file SA 100 and SA106 online with out an account? Is it possible to open an account with the UTR but without the NI numberOr will we have to file paper forms before October 31st? Thank you. -
Long wait for CF83 request response
Hello, On my Government account I see that I'm eligible to make up 12 missing years of NI contributions. From 2006-2018. I reached state pension age in 2018 and have only 8 qualifying years prior to leaving the UK in 1979. So until I pay to add years I do not yet qualify for any state pension. I plan on paying all 12 missing years. I've retired and moved to the UK in 2023 and plan to continue living here. On my account I'm quoted at Class 3 rate for the 12 missing years I wasn't sure if I could make up those years at Class 2 rate (as I was self employed in USA for all of those 12 years) as I was no longer living abroad and had passed state pension age. I sent a CF83 and cover letter in November last year seeking some clarification on this but have had no response. On my HMRC account it shows receipt of a form in November last year but not which form or any progress. Wondering if there is any way I can check on the status of that enquiry. Not sure who to call or how to follow up on this. -
RE: Filing first self assessment as UK resident but non UK citizen
Yes, she does meet filing criteria, ( tax resident and foreign income above personal allowance) and has a UTR issued by HMRC. She does not have a NI number since she is retired US citizen here in UK on spouse visa after 40 + years in USA and will not work in UK. Was wondering how she files with her UTR but no personal tax account as it looks like an account is required to be able to file online. Should she apply for a NI number anyway so she can open an account? Or can she do a paper filing if it takes too long to be issued a NI number? We want to file taxes as soon as we can. Thank you. -
Confused about paying NI shortfall. How to get 18 digit reference number
Hello. I'm a UK citizen recently returned to live permanently in UK. I reached state pension age in 2018. I have a new online account with HMRC. I was able to view my National Insurance record and it shows I have 8 years of NI contributions prior to moving to USA in 1979. According to my NI record I am eligible to pay for up to 12 missing years to qualify for State pension. Last year I contacted HMRC and was told that I could pay for the missing years and they would issue an 18 digit reference number. I put that temporarily on pause until I was sure how many years I could afford to pay. In the meantime I read online that I may be eligible to pay Class 2 contributions instead of the Class 3 amounts showing for each missing year on my record. I submitted a CF83 form and a cover letter as I was self employed in the US for 40 years. On my HMRC account it shows that the form was received 10/11/2023. No other information. I called again yesterday to HMRC helpline then referred to International pensions and also Future pension Center for information and update and was told that I had to request a letter confirming which years I could pay for and that letter would include amounts for each year, payment options and an 18 digit reference number, the person I spoke with submitted the request but said it would take 20 weeks to receive that letter. I'm ready to pay for the missing years but I'm concerned I've not navigated this process correctly/very well or that the information I've been given is accurate. Would appreciate any advise about how best to proceed. Thank you. -
RE: Tax on Savings Interest
This will be my first year filing self assessment as I retired and have moved from USA to UK. My sole income is my US Social Security pension of about £24000/year and an additional £6000 of US sourced interest income. How is this all taxed after I take my £12570 personal allowance? I'm confused about how the interest is taxed. Are pension and interest combined and balance after personal allowance taxed at 20% or is the interest separate and taxed differently? Thank you -
RE: Filing first self assessment as UK resident but non UK citizen
Will she need to file a paper version self assessment return? She has the UTR but was not able to open an account so I assume without an account she can't file the return online. Is that correct? -
First year filing self assessment
Hello. I have a question regarding my first year filing self assessment tax return. I'm a UK/US citizen recently relocated to UK and I am UK tax resident with only pension and interest income from US. No UK income. I just completed my US tax return for 2023 tax year and understand that I'm required to file a self assessment return with HMRC. After my personal allowance and falling in the 20% tax bracket It looks like I will owe about 3500 pounds in tax for April 2023- April 2024 tax year. I've been reading that I will be required to make payments on account for tax year April 2024-April 2025. Was wondering what my requirements and timing deadlines etc. will be for payments on account moving forward as I anticipate this same scenario each year and don't want to incur any penalties or interest. Won't know the exact amount of tax I will owe until I complete and file my first UK return. Thanks for any advice and direction on this.
