Just an FYI for anyone else reading this - I finally got through to a very helpful rep. He said that basically, as long as the payment itself was made before 31st January, you will not incur a fine. Even if it takes a few days to register the payment on your online account, and even it registers past the deadline, the system notes when the payment itself was actually made and goes by that date instead. Hope this helps.

Hi, I set up a direct debit on January 19th to pay my tax. Came out of my bank on January 26th - still has not shown up on my government gateway account though? Now that it's the 31st January I'm worried I'm going to incur a fine even though I paid it days ago. Still on the phone, they won't pick up on the helpline. Will I still receive a fine even though it's actually left my bank and been paid?
