Hi, currently i'm a local and my tax is taken out by the NHS before I am paid weekly. I incur many expenses like travel and hotels. Am i able to register as a business and claim the VAT which is in hundreds a month? I am a locum via an agency. thanks

Hi
You can register as a business but for VAT purposes you would need to have a turnover of £85,000 or more and would need to charge VAT for goods and services.
You would need to check How VAT works as to whether you can then claim back the VAT for expenses.

It seems i may have selected the wrong words. let me rephrase, Can i claim tax relief for travel, hotels, and food that are accrued as a result of working as a locum in a hospital, via an locum agency. My salary being taxed by the NHS prior to reaching me.

Hi ,

If the NHS is deducting tax from your locum income, you would appear to be employed by the NHS and not self employed.

Have a look at :

Claim tax relief for your job expenses

for information on travel and overnight expenses .

If you are self employed, the rules will be different.

Have a look at :

Expenses if you're self-employed  , for car, van and travel expenses.

Thank you.
