Can't get VAT ID?

Hello I have an online business in the states using Stripe and I was told I exceeded my UK threshold and needed to apply using the HMCR website for a VAT ID. I did this 6 months ago, got an email saying I would hear back in 6 weeks. I have sent numerous follow up emails to support with my reference number to ask for someone, anyone to get back to me. I have called multiple times, to never get to talk to any real human being. What is the deal here? Did I do something wrong, I don't understand.
