I received a letter sent recorded delivery in the post and unclear if it is real or a hoax. Letter does not ask for money but does ask for details. It is a letter about registering for VAT overseas with a cover letter from HMRC. Letter contains my name and address but not my company name. Letter states HMRC are merely assisting the overseas tax authorities and cannot comment, or provide any advice on the contents of the enclosed documents. Letter has HMRC letterhead but appears to be a photocopy with my details printed on. My county is spelt incorrectly in the address. The HMRC address in the top right is actually two addresses, one in London and one in Newcastle but London is missed out, and the newcastle address does not feature at the bottom of the letter. An email address is given with an @hmrc.gov.uk but it seems an unusual address. Letter is signed but the signature is photocopied. I have the letter reference. Please suggest how I should proceed. I have sent details and a scan of the letter to hmrc phishing email but they will not comment because it is not an email but a letter.
