I am a naturalised UK citizen, but have left the UK 3 years ago and I am not a tax resident in the UK. Question 1: I would like to help a dear friend of mine who is a UK citizen to purchase a home by giving them a large cash gift to the tune of 50k. Would she be liable for tax on that? I am reading conflicting things. On one hand on this forum I read that there is no tax obligation on tax gifts https://community.hmrc.gov.uk/customerforums/pt/365c847c-28f2-ec11-b5cf-00155d9c6b71 Yet, on other sites I am reading that there is an upper limit of 3k or something like that. Question 2: My friend insists the cash gift should be a long term loan. If I do end up loaning her the money over 10 years, assuming there is no interest, is there any tax obligation arising from that transaction? Thank for your help.

Hi,

There are no Income Tax implications on the receipt of a cash gift unless the cash gift generates interest or dividends. These would then potentially be subject to tax.
Further guidance can be seen here:

Tax on savings interest

Tax on dividends

Whilst there are no Income Tax implications on the giving or receipt of cash gifts, you may wish to speak to Inheritance Tax regarding any Inheritance Tax implications.

You may also want to review the guidance here:

Thank you.
