Struggling to disband a VAT group

We had previously tried to deregister for VAT, and (eventually) managed to find out that it hadn't been done because we needed to disband the VAT group first. So we are trying to do this, we have posted the form twice, and emailed, but HMRC are still saying they don't have it in their system. Is there anything I can do to move this along, as we are trying to wind the company up and this is the final thing holding us up. We are about to incur a whole lot of additional costs associated with filing an additional years accounts, and would desperately like to avoid this. We have been trying to sort this since February, and every time we call HMRC, we sit on hold for upwards of an hour just to be bounced off
