I am soon to sell a flat I have rented for 17 years. I stayed in it for three years. I believe I can share the CGT allowance with my wife if I transfer 50% ownership to her. I have since been told that this would be pointless, as she'd have been associated with the property for such a short time.. Can anyone advise, thanks?

Hi,

If you gift this to your wife and then the house is sold, she is classed as having acquired it at the date you bought it and all income and expenses would then be split 50/50. You can see guidance here:

Gifts to your spouse or charity

Thank you.
