How long is it taking to process a paper Capital Gains on UK Property Return 23/24 please.? HMRC call centre in January confirmed delays but couldn’t say how long? Advised to wait!!Worried as now well outside 60 days allowed for reporting and paying!! A paper return ( paper because the person is Australian and couldnt file on line as couldn’t pass the id process for a gov gateway account)was completed in November 3 days into the 60 day deadline. It was sent by registered post 27/11/23 and delivered 28/11/23. Still not heard anything and want to pay the CGT asap. Help please. Thank you.

Hi,

We do have a large backlog at present, however, the 60 day deadline for payment will be extended as it is a paper form. Once we process it, you will be given a further 14 days from then to make payment without any charges being imposed.

Thank you.

Thank you for that. Can you please give me some indication of how far your backlog goes & when a return from November might be processed as when should I start worrying that you’ve lost the return?! Also If I’m away when the paper return is processed and miss the 14 day payment will I be fined? Thank you for your help

Hi,

Unfortunately, we cannot advise when a paper tax return will be processed.  So long as the paper PPDCGT return for the disposal of residential property was received withing 60 days of the disposal, then there will be no late filing penalty.

When the return is processed, my colleagues will write to you to advise you of the payment reference number and how you can pay the tax. You will have 60 days from the date the payment reference number is created to pay the tax.

You have the right to appeal any penalties that are imposed, but not any interest charges as interest rates are set in legislation. You can see guidance here:

HMRC interest rates for late and early payments

For confirmation of receipt of your paper tax return, you will need to contact our Self Assesment team.

Thank you.
