I am trying to pay CGT for 2022-23 but can't register what I owe and pay. I had to pay CGT in France as part of this and there were big delays getting the final figure so was only in the last week or so. that I've been able to calculate the correct figure. The real-time online system says you can report gains for 22/23 or 23/24 but when you put in a date for the date of the CGT it won't allow a date for 22/23 financial year. I can now see that it shows the gain should have been reported by the end of December for the online system, but why is it still showing that I can register gains for 22/23 when it than won't allow me. After eventually getting through to someone on the phone line, the only advice was to register for self assessment online. All my income is PAYE so this is the only extra payment that I need to declare. I've done this, but when I check when I should receive a response it now shows 10th March (it was the 8th when I checked yesterday) as they are only up to 19 December processing the applications. There doesn't seem to be any way to get a reference number in order to make a payment without either a response from the online system or from a self assessment. Is there any way to get a reference to pay. Trying to phone for help just leads to a long wait, answering a set of questions and then then getting told to use the online chat (which won't deal with cgt issue) before being cut-off This is causing me sleepless nights which are having a detrimental affect on both my physical and mental well-being. Any help on this would be great.

Hi stu_b,
The real time system was only available until 31/12/23 to report any capital gains for the 22/23 tax year.
You will now need to register for Self Assessment and complete a tax return for the 22/23 tax year to declare your UK income and the cpaital gain. Self Assessment tax returns
Thank you.

The guidelines need updating as they still state that the realtime online system can be used to report capital tax gains for fy 2022/23 This is from the link https://www.gov.uk/report-and-pay-your-capital-gains-tax/if-you-have-other-capital-gains-to-report which still shows the details Report using the ‘real time’ Capital Gains Tax service You can use the service to report gains on assets you sold during the tax year: 2022 to 2023 2023 to 2024 It is only when you go to register the gains that it states the deadline was the end of December. If this had been clear in the main guidelines I would have registered for self assessment weeks ago and would have been able to file a self assessment return and have paid the tax I owe by now. When you register for self assessment, why isn't there an email/text confirmation process that the registration has been sent. I did take screen shots of my details so know that what I provided is correct. What are the best guidelines around the fines and appeals process. I can expect a £100 penalty as I couldn't complete self assessment by the end of January. With it likely being another 4/5 weeks before I get a UTR and can therefore complete the self assessment, what penalties can I expect?

Hi,

Report and pay your Capital Gains Tax

The above link states "You must report by 31 December in the tax year after you made your gain and pay by 31 January. For example, if you made a gain in the 2023 to 2024 tax year, you need to report it by 31 December 2024 and pay by 31 January 2025.

You have the right to appeal the late filing penalty for the tax return being late, stating the grounds of your appeal.

You can do this at:

SA370 Appeal – Self Assessment: Appeal against penalties for late filing and late payment

An appeal will only be considered once the tax return is received."
