Am a landlord jointly with my wife 50/50. Its our only car and so the family car, its in my name and registered to me although my wife is insured for it and does also drive it. My question is. We each fill out a tax return but when claiming for mileage its mostly only myself in the car visiting the property for various reasons, so do I claim all of the mileage and my wife none or do we still split the mileage 50/50 for our tax returns. Never bothered before but last tax year I did more mileage for the property than usual.

 Hi,
Thank you for your question.
Any expense that has been incurred in the rental business should be split on the basis of how the property is beneficially owned.
In the scenario you describe, the mileage expense would be split 50/50 with your wife.
Thank you.
