If someone rented a room in their home and had no other income, would tax rules be the same as they would be for employment, I.e. up to £12,570 of the rent would be 0% tax and anything else up to £50,000 would be 20%? Or do different rules apply? Thanks.

Thank you for your question. Yes the same tax rules would apply. Any income over the rent a room relief limit would be taxable. If no other income was received then the first £12570 would

be tax free, the remainder above this would be taxed at 20%.
