Tax Letters are demanding that my Mum files her 2021-2022 Taxes NOW or incur PENALTIES, yet her Personal Account is showing that she doesn’t need to file one. (She doesn’t have a business account). I have discovered she has 2 UTR Gateway Accounts for her Tax Account, let’s call them UTR1 and UTR2. UTR1 - Contains her “ Personal” Tax Return Information. This area says she doesn’t need to file Tax returns for 2021-2022. UTR2 - Was requesting we file a Self Assessment Tax Form for 2021 -2022 which I duly SUBMITTED. Afterwards I realised the reason the Account looked different was that I was using a different UTR number. In fact this Self Assessment form was labelled “Business”. Where do I go from here? Will my 2021-2022 Tax Form reach HMRC? Is it a problem it’s done from a “Business” UTR? Will my Personal Account (UTR1) reflect that I’ve completed the Tax Form? How do I make a payment?

Hi,

Only one Government Gateway ID can be linked to Self Assessment. When accessing Self Assessment online, this can be done through the 'business tax account' or 'personal tax account' for the same login details. If the UTR number shown on the business account matches the reference in the penalty letters then it is the correct one.

Thank you.

Thank you. Yes, I’ve muddled up UTRs and Gateway IDs in my question. Instead of UTR1 and UTR2, read Gateway Account 1 and Gateway Account 2. Gateway 1 says she doesn’t owe tax and is her “Personal Tax Account” Gateway 2 says she does owe tax and says “Business Account”. If I try to access her Personal Account details from here it says there is a Duplicate Account. She doesn’t have a “business” and never has, I have entered her Taxes in Gateway 2 as the forms were there! Will HMRC be able to act on these and update her “Personal Tax Account” do you think?

Hi,

Usually you can access the 'Personal Tax Account' from multiple IDs but only access Self Assessment from one. Normally when you access Self Assessment from the non linked account, you would get the message to say there is another login but this doesn't usually happen the other way around.

Thank you.
