I recently completed a CF83 for a period I spent abroad from 2004 until 2011 and I worked for 3 years during part of that time. Unfortunately in my cover letter I gave an incorrect date on my timeline for leaving work in the UK prior to going abroad and I couldn't claim the cheaper Voluntary Class 2 contributions. I called HMRC to report this but was told that because I worked abroad before 2015 I couldn't pay Class 2 contributions anyway, only Class 3. Is this correct as this was not mentioned in my reply letter and I haven't read this anywhere on the HMRC website. I had hoped to rectify the date and discuss it with the case worker who dealt with my claim but I was told that it was closed and I would have to reapply. There is no point in reapplying if I cannot claim the Class 2 contributions (I know I can claim Class 3). Could someone verify that I can no longer claim Class 2 voluntary contributions in the period I was working abroad before 2015?

Hi Roseleen Kelly,
I can confirm that it is possible to pay voluntary Class 2 National Insurance contributions whilst overseas from the 2006-2007 tax year.
If you could send us a letter with your correct dates of employment our International Team will be able to review your National Insurance account and quote any voluntary Class 2 contributions that are recorded.
Our postal address is:
HM Revenue & Customs, PT Operations North East England, BX9 1AN, United Kingdom.
Before paying any voluntary contributions you should check with the Future Pension Centre to make sure that it is worthwhile for you to pay them. Details of how to do this may be found here:
Check your State Pension forecast
Thank you.
