What is the reference number on the CF38 direct debit form?

Hi there, On the CF83 direct debit form, it asks for 'Reference' and there are 9 empty boxes to fill in: what is the reference number? Is it the national insurance number? My taxpayer reference number is 10 digits long so I am assuming it is not this. Many thanks.

Hi Jade,
Sorry for the confusion regarding the Reference to be used.  Please put your National Insurance Number in this box on the direct debit form.
