I’ve just done my self assessment for 2022/23. Newly SE earning very little so wanted to pay voluntary class 2 NI to boost my state pension. It wouldn’t let me do this! Was it because I am now receiving the state pension - however I only started getting it in June 23.

Hi,

That is correct. As you have reached the State Pension age, National Insurance is not due.]

Thank you.

I had not reached state pension age during the 22/23 tax year. So I should’ve been able to pay - surely. Despite having 38 qualifying years i as told I hadn’t paid enough for a full state pension.

Hi Demelza Dee,
You cannot choose to continue to pay National Insurance on earnings after State Pension age, but you may have an opportunity to pay contributions for some previous years.
Normally you may make voluntary contributions for up to the last 6 years, if for any reason you have not obtained a full years contributions for any of these years.
Please refer to:
Voluntary National Insurance
Thank you.

Hi Demelza Dee,
As you were submitting your tax return  before the 31/01/24 you should have been able to select the option to pay C lass 2 NICs o a voluntary basis.
To enable us to investigate why this was not possible, you will need to contact the NI helpline on 0300 200 3500. Lines are open 8am – 6pm Monday to Friday.
Thank you.
