I live overseas and after getting on the phone HMRC, I paid my voluntary NI contributions using the 'IC' number reference given to me and it is from my UK bank account. I realised the account name is still in my maiden name which has not been updated since getting married but my HMRC name is my married name. My question is - is this going to cause issue or its fine as long as the bank transfer reference number inputted is correct? I heard some issues with people paying from their joint account so want to make sure. Secondly, I have to pay the contributions for my parents as well as they dont have money. so again this is from my own bank account but I will be putting in THEIR HMRC payment reference number as well after calling up HMRC and getting it over the phone. Is this going to cause issues? again, payee bank account (me) is not same as the beneficiary (my parents). Thanks Christina

Hi,
The issue with the surname should not affect your payment of voluntary National Insurance contributions.  The 18 Digit Reference Number that you would have used on your bank transfer would have included your National Insurance Number so your payment will be allocated to this.  If your parents are overseas then you sending a bank transfer for them then, again, this should not be a problem as you will use their National Insurance Number as part of their 18 Digit Reference Number when you make your bank transfer for them.
Thank you.
