For the second year in a row I have applied for an S1 renewal within the time frame stated on the expiring certificate. My S1's expire on December 22nd. And, for the second year in a row I am left without an up to date certificate as my application is still in progress. This is pretty poor but indicative of the state Britain finds itself in now. How do I go about chasing up this application please? What number would I use to speak to a human - your phone system kept telling me to be patient when my application had been overlooked (confirmed by your agents) last year. Fortunately I am in the UK at the moment but I am returning home in the new year and would like to sort out my Social Security car in Spain when I go back. Many thanks!

Thank you for your reply. I have already done this and allegedly I should be able to get an update on the 15th. Thats roughly ten weeks after I applied. The certificate advises to apply six weeks before expiry to ensure that the certificate is renewed before its expiry. Will you now be amending that advice as this is the second year where you haven't been able to fulfill that timeframe. For future reference how far in advance do you suggest applying?

Hi Elizabeth,
In order to apply for an S1 now you must apply for an A1.
You will need to complete the CA8421, if you are entitled to an S1 you will receive both an A1 and S1.
Thank you,

Thank you. On the original S1 renewal I would also apply for my husband to be covered as he is my dependent. I see on the form you suggest I apply there is no ability to do that. Can you advise how I apply for him to receive cover also

Hi Elizabeth,
In order to apply for an S1 for your dependents you can apply on the CA8454 application form (this is the same application that you used to complete for the S1).
It will ask if you are applying for your dependents.
Thank you.

Hi, I am moving to Spain to work from there for a UK company (remotely). I am going to apply for an A1 and after that I will apply for the S1. I have read that the A1 certificate has a duration of 24 months but I am planning to stay longer. Is there a possibility to extend it and how would that work? I am both British and Spanish, if that means something here. Thank you very much in advance.

Hi,
You may request an extension for your current Certificate using the same form after you have received it.
It is advisable to offer the caseworkers detailed explanations and relevant supporting documents that may be unique to your situation for an extension. Therefore, it would be beneficial to reach out to the International Caseworkers to clarify your circumstances, enabling them to inform you of the specific information they will need from you.
Additionally, you are not required to wait for a response from the caseworkers before submitting your initial application; you can also include as much information about why you need an extension with your initial submission.

When you apply for an A1, if you meet the criteria, an S1 will be issued as standard.
Thank you.

@HMRC Admin 8 Response thank you very much for your response which seems to be the best i've seen. Unfortunately I have applied for an A1 and been denied it. I have had an S1 for the last few years and I am now without medical cover in Spain. However I will take your advice and mail the address you have given. Your online system is NOT fit for purpose and really appears as though the person who designed it didn't have any idea about S1 holders like myself. Thank you for your help.
