I cannot register for the Gov Gateway as my documents now contain my married name with my tax/NI number linked to my maiden name. This is quite frustrating, how can I accomplish this name change for HMRC. If I am required to write to HMRC what documents will I need to enclose to get these details changed and access gateway. Thanks

Hi,

You will need to contact our National Insurance (NI) team and pass security and then we can amend your new married name to match your passport and driving license. Once it is changed it can take up to 72 hours to reflect on your records.

National Insurance: general enquiries

We can also add details of the marriage date for an extra security question but please be aware for the marriage to be official on HMRC systems we would need to see sight of the marriage certificate. A certified copy must be signed as a true copy and stamped with a date by a government department, legal organisation or a medical body for example:

In the UK,  a solicitors office, doctors surgery or chartered accountants. Outside the UK, a mayor's office or British Consulate

Once it is changed you should be able to access your personal tax account.

Thank you.
