Hi, I'm a UK resident with a full time work since 2013. In 2018 I opened a company in Portugal with my wife. We're founders / managing directors but we never took any salary nor dividends from the company. We're also the only employees. The company is still open, but it's still not profitable enough for us to consider taking a salary. Recently, we got a letter from Seguranca Social (National Insurance in Portugal) saying that the managing directors (me and my wife) may be exempt from paying national insurance (in Portugal) if we can proof that we've been paying national insurance since 2018 elsewhere. Initially, through the accountant in Portugal, we share our payslips showing the taxes. They didn't accept so we then shared our P60s from 2018 onwards, which was also not enough. I believe the documents above show income tax but what they're looking is national security contributions. I can see these contributions since 2013 on the HMRC portal, however, I don't think a screenshot will be enough. Is there an offical document I can ask HMRC showing all my national insurance contributions since 2018? I think they talked about an A1 form. I started filling in the details but this seems to be related to posted workers which is not the case looking at the description below: "Form A1: This is the certificate issued by HMRC that certifies an individual will remain under the UK's National Insurance contributions system while working temporarily in another European Economic Area (EEA) country or Switzerland." I'm not looking to "remain under the UK's National Insurance contributions system while working temporarily in another European Economic Area (EEA) country". I just want a document showing that I've been making national insurance contributions in the UK since 2018. Thanks in advance, Claudio

Hi,

From the information you have provided you will need to apply for a portable document A1. The application form you require is a CA8421, and you can find this here:

Apply for a certificate to confirm you pay UK National Insurance when working in 2 or more countries (CA8421)

Alternatively, you can apply for a statement of National Insurance, to apply for this you should complete the CA3916, which you can find here:

Get a PDU1 certificate or a National Insurance contributions statement

Thank you.
