Simple question but one I can’t find a simple answer to. My wife and I returned to the UK from France on 7th March and I understood we should tell HMRC asap even though we are not tax resident immediately. Using the government gateway says we are too early to register. Do we literally wait 183 days and try again or is there a simpler way? We are trying to avoid being asked for 6 month’s tax in one go.

Not HMRC...did you previously have self assessment UTR's? If so, and if you need to, complete SA returns after 5 April, with residence pages (wont be able to use HMRC systems as they dont support resdience pages, so paper forms or commercial software). Complete the return with worldwide income from 7 March and UK income for the full year and on the residence pages (covering the year to 5 April 2025) you answer the questions and enter the date of return to claim split year (if appropriate), the 183 days is irrelevant, you have returned, should be split year 24/25 and fully resident 25/26
