Hi, My salary is £60000 and I got my bonus of £5000 in my June pay. I got taxed a very large amount last month as I’m aware that the PAYE system taxed me as though I’d earn £10000 a month every month. I just received July’s payslip and instead of being taxed a lower amount than April & May’s (pre-bonus) payslips to compensate for the overpayment I made in June, the Tax is exactly the same and it’s as though it thinks I didn’t pay ~2k extra in income tax last month. Will I have to now wait until the end of the year to get this back as a rebate? Thanks

Hi,

When tax is deducted from your pay, a calculation is done based on how much you have paid so far in the tax year and compares that to how much you should have paid so far in the year. Any overpayment of tax would result in you paying less tax in the following month.

If you are unsure if you have paid the correct amount of tax, you can contact our Income Tax team with your latest payslip and we can check this.
