Hi there, I wonder if I can please get some advice here? I took voluntary severance from my previous job and was paid severance pay from which I paid around 9k in taxes. I was wondering if I can claim back the tax I paid and put it into pension scheme which I joined recently, after my severance pay was paid to me. I was jobless for over 2 months while I was looking for a new job and did not claim any benefits. Thank you in advance.

Hi,
If you have returned to employment you will now need to wait until after 6 April 2025 for any refund as we will need to know your annual income to work this out. what you then do with any repayment due is up to you.
Thank you.

Hi thank you for your swift response! Can I please clarify? I meant, would it be possible to lets say, ask HMRC to refund me 9k which i paid as tax in September 2024 and pay that into private pension which I joined in November 2024? I mean if I has private pension in September 2024 and decided to pay excess of 30k of my severance pay (anything above taxfree 30k), into pension, I would be exempt from 9k tax, would I? Thank you!

Hi,
If you have overpaid tax, you can claim a refund and pay the refund into your pension scheme.
Thank you.
