French Government Pension under £300

I receive a small pension from the French Government of approximately £130 per year. I wrote to HMRC who replied that I had to file a self assessment form . When I tried to register I noted on the form that if you receive income from abroad less than £300 you do not have to register for self assessment. Can you confirm this please as I was unable to reach HMRC on the telephone. I was cut off while waiting.
