Hello HMRC Admin, I am a BNO Visa holder, and I started my Full Time Perm Job since this April 2023. I selected PAYE to pay my tax and my employer has placed me on 1257L (**NOTE: there is no W1/M1/X after this code). I suppose because I am NEW employee and this is my 1st UK job. May I inquire whether I need to file for tax returns? Also, whether I should change my tax code from 1257L to something else for next fiscal? When should I inform the change to my HMRC and my employer? For the gift savings that I transferred during this fiscal period, do I still need to file in despite it has been taxed in my home country? Would I be taxed again for this? Is there a limit and time restriction? Thank you for your help. Cheers,

Hi Sabrina,
A tax return is not required for the 2022/23 tax year as you did not have any UK income until the 2023/24 tax year.
You will not pay tax on the capital that you have transferred but you will  need to pay tax on any interest or dividends that this then generates.
Thank you.
