I will receive my last pay packet at the end of April and my only other income will be my state pension. I will be getting a bonus of 25K in May , given I have been a 40% tax payer will I be stopped 40% of the 25K bonus and have to claim the money back because I will only be a 20% tax payer going forward

Hi Malcolm Good,
As the bonus will be paid in May which is the 2nd tax month of the 2024/25 tax year then you will pay some tax at 40%.
After you receive your P45 from your employer you can submit a form P50 to review for a repayment:
Claim back Income Tax when you've stopped working (P50)
Thank you.
