In August 2022, I started working in a new school as a teacher. For that whole year, I was put on an emergency tax code and was taxed over and above relative to my earnings. Furthermore, I received no tax back in August 2023 as I usually do. I do have a recent owed tax of £147.26 from HMRC, however, that is for 6 April 2023 to 5 April 2024. My tax codes and tax paid were as follows for September 22 to March 24: September 22 54LM1 £171.60 October 22 54LM1 £533.40 November 22 54LM1 £425 December 22 54LM1 £425 January 23 54LM1 £316.40 February 23 54LM1 £425 March 23 54LM1 £352.60 April 23 823L £333 May 23 823L £179.40 June 23 823L £260.80 July 23 823L (no pay, didn't work in June) August 23 823L £228.80 September 823L £183.20 October 23 823L £158 November 23 823L £158.20 December 23 823L £25 January 24 823L £15.60 February 24 823L £24 March 24 1261L Can you provide me with an explanation of these tax codes and the tax I paid as it does not appear to be correct? Can you also explain why I was never repaid the emergency tax I paid?
