I wanted to clarify some information. I'm a British Citizen who worked in HK from 2006-2022. I returned to the UK in the summer of 2022 but didn't bring my HK MPF with me at the time. Just over one year on, I'd like to withdraw my HK MPF, and I believe that if I withdraw it as one lump sum now, due to the HK-UK Double Taxation Agreement, I don't need to declare this for personal tax purposes. Can you confirm if this is still correct please? Are there any regulations about the money being transferred? For example, does the payment need to be transferred directly to my UK bank account from my MPF account, or can it be transferred to my HK bank account, and then to a foreign exchange company to get the best exchange rate? Thank you for your advice on this matter.

Hi Neil Horton,
Under the terms of the double taxation treaty, the MPF is only taxable in Hong Kong and doesn't need to be declared here.
Thank you.

I have my MPF from HK paid back to me. I am tax resident of UK. For the reason of doubla taxation treaty, am I right to say that I do not need to report this to HMRC in my forecoming tax return even I transfer the money to UK? Thank you very much

Hi,
The double taxation agreement between the UK and Hong Kong, advises that pensions and other similar remunerations, arising in Hong Kong and paid to a resident of the UK, are taxable only in Hong Kong.
For this reason, it should not be included in your self assessment tax return.  Article 17 of the DTA Agreement between Hong Kong and the UK applies:
UK/HONG KONG DOUBLE TAXATION AGREEMENT AND PROTOCOL

Thank you.
