Hi, I am in process of filing P85 online tax refund for the year 2023-24. I left UK in SEP-2023. In HMRC portal it is asking for an address to send a pay order/cheque but there is no option of online account transfer of the refund. Can you help? Q1. Does HMRC do not process online refund directly to bank account in case of P85 refunds? Q2. Is the cheque is only based on my name? Can I encash the cheque in any bank in foreign country?

Hi nilb777,
The Pay As You Earn service does not automatically send overpayments to your bank account.
The service holds the overpayment, so that you can log into your personal tax account and enter your bank account details, to claim the repayment. After approximately 6 weeks, a payable order will be printed and posted to you are the address we have on record.
You can opt to nominated a trusted person to receive the payment on your behalf, in which case, a payable order will be addressed to them, so that they can cash it for your and send you the money.
Payable orders can only be cashed in a UK bank or Building society.
Thank you.
