Both my husband and I have received PPI refunds in the past via a 3rd party who took a commission plus tax ?VAT, not sure of the dates but probably at least 7-8years ago. I have recently read that people are able to claim back the tax that was deducted from the PPI refund, how does this work and can I submit a claim direct to HMRC or do I have to go through a claims management company. Also I have heard of claims being made (most likely fraudulently) by claims management companies without the knowledge or consent of the person in question who only learn of this when HMRC write and tell them a refund has been issued to a company on their behalf. We have moved house in the past 18mths and although mail was forwarded for a time is there any way I can check if refunds have been issued in mine or my husbands name?

Hi,

You would need to contact our Income Tax team to check if refunds have been issued, but HMRC review the current tax year plus the previous 4 tax years.
