Deductions

Hi, After submitting a self assessment due to the HICBC my bill was to pay nothing. I have since had my new tax codes through and a breakdown of deductions. In the last 12 month I have earned 55k and I have 21k deductions? I've called HMRC to query this and still do not understand how I can have such high deductions?
