Hi,
If you intend to leave the UK but have not yet left, you must print and post your P85.
You can tell HMRC that you have left the UK and want to claim back tax from your UK employment here:
Get your Income Tax right if you're leaving the UK (P85)
Thank you.

Hi, thank you for your response but just want to know one more thing, so I wonder if it's for all the years that i worked here or just for the current year? Thank you

Hi,
Each tax year is reviewed separately. If you have paid the correct amount of tax in the previous years, there would be no refund due. The P85 would include your P45 from the employment you left, so that any overpaid tax can be calculated.
Thank you.

Hello, I am a U.S. resident with Indian passport. I moved from U.S. to London in 2019 for a period of 3 years on a secondment (it was an internal company transfer) before coming back to U.S. in 2022. My question is, can I get my National Insurance (NIC) deduction back or associated with my social security in U.S. I read few sources where it says that it should happen as there is a treaty between U.S. and UK but I am not quite sure what’s the process. What are my options here? Please advise, thanks!

Hi, I moved to the USA in 01/2024 and have been working there full time since then. I normally would not complete a self-assessment with tax being done through PAYE. Can I file a P85 in this case, or do I need to complete a self assessment for the 2023/2024 period? I did not return to the UK for the remainder of the 2023/2024 tax year. I was paid a bonus in February of 2024 after relocating, but this has been taxed in the UK through PAYE (on 0T tax code). Many thanks!

Hi Manish,
Unfortunately, no refund of National Insurance contributions is available to you. As the contributions were correctly paid, then they must remain recorded on your UK National Insurance account. They may, however, help with your US Pension and you should let the US Pension Office know that you worked in the UK when you make your claim to pension.
If you lived in the UK for 3 years or more you may wish to consider paying voluntary National Insurance contributions to improve your UK Pension. Details are given in our leaflet NI38 ‘Social Security Abroad’ which is available here:
Social Security abroad: NI38
Thank you.
