I moved to the UK from other country on 1 April 2024. I was not a UK tax resident in 23/24. I didn’t have any job in the uk but I did have some foreign income in 23/24. In this case, do I need to complete a self assessment for 23/24 please? Thanks.

Hi,
You can use the tool below to check if you need to submit a Self Assessment return:
Check if you need to send a Self Assessment tax return
Thank you.

Thank you for your response. However, I noticed that the tool does not consider whether I was a UK tax resident or not during the tax year. Could you clarify if the outcome of the tool means that one would need to file a Self Assessment return regardless of their tax residency status in that year? For instance, if a person has foreign income but is not a UK tax resident, would they still be required to submit a Self Assessment return based on the tool’s result? If that’s the case, wouldn’t it imply that all non-resident visitors (e.g. travellers) with foreign income would need to complete a Self Assessment, even if they’re only visiting the UK temporarily for a few days? Thank you for your clarification.

Hi,
If you were not a UK resident in 2023/24, you would not generally have to pay UK tax on your foreign income in that year.
You can read more here:

If you would like us to confirm whether tax was due on any of your income, contact us by webchat or phone via:

Thank you.
