"Losses used against an earlier year's gain" help

Hello, in section 2022-23 capital losses – other information, box 48, it states: "Losses used against an earlier year’s gain". Does this mean that I am permitted to carry a loss backward to help with a gain from 2 years ago, that exceeded my gain allowance at the time?
