My husband received a letter from HMRC today saying that we may be liable for the 'High income child benefit charge' for 2023-2024, I followed the links and had no idea that there was a cap, we now owe about 8 years where his salary was over £50K! neither of us can believe that we didn't know this and that they didn't contact us before now! He registered for self assessment immediately and filled out the form but we can't work out whether we need to fill out a form for each year? Will we be charged a penalty as it goes back until about 2016, we used the calculator and it says we owe at least £9K!!! How will we be expected to pay this, will we be given some time? Really worried about this and genuinely had no idea.
