Hi I'm contracting as a Youth Mobility visa holder and wondering if I can be paid before I've registered for self-assessment for this tax year? This is my first tax year as a UK tax resident, and I'm just waiting for my National Insurance number to be provided so that I can then register for self-assessment (as someone self-employed). Would be great to be paid while I wait though (I already have a bank account). Thanks!

Hi Contracting,
Yes, you can start your business before you register.
You can register as a sole trader here:
Register as a sole trader
A tax return will be required for the tax year in which you commenced your trade.
Thank you.
