Hi. I'm completing my first self assessment. My spouse and I will pay less tax if I declare all our rental income on my return. We are residents within Spain and our property rental income, pensions and savings are all UK based. This will save us Tax. We have been told it's cheaper in Spain to complete a separate return. If we do this do we need to mirror our UK tax return in terms of what percentage of income we each claim. We have also been told we to fill out a Double taxation form submit to HMRC

Hi,

If the property is in joint names you both need to declare it 50/50 for all rental income and expenses. You both need to complete a tax return and the double taxation form is not applicable for the UK rental income as this remains liable in the UK. You can see guidance here:
