Hello, I am so confused and feeling very worried about a letter I received regarding the high income charge for child benefit for the last tax year. I only claimed child benefit for 6 months as I didn’t want to be penalised, and my role changed halfway through the calendar year with less earnings. I did an estimate calculation online like my letter said and it says I owed over £700, there is no way I can pay that back in one lump sum, what are the options available to you? I was on maternity leave until Jan 2023 and my earnings for the last tax year are so varied so it’s really confusing. I feel sick with worry at the moment, I have registered for my self assessment but unsure what happens now, do I wait for further comms from HMRC?

Hi,
If you are unable to pay the balance as a one off payment then you can check on the payment plan options available here:
If you cannot pay your tax bill on time
Thank you.
