Hi I am self-employed, UK resident and UK tax payer, working as a non-executive director in financial services. Most of my earnings are from abroad. I was recently offered a position as non executive chairman of a financial services company abroad but both the company and the local financial services authority made it a condition of the contract that I have a local property and must spend a significant amount of time based there, I am therefore going to rent an apartment locally and spend a lot of time based there and working there (but not enough to change my tax resident status in the UK). My question is since this is a necessary business expense, is the rent tax deductible? If yes, what is a reasonable property/cost based on my work status, need for home office and the significant time I must spend there? Many thanks
