I have to do a Self assessment and I am confused as to whether I input my Private medical or not. I am PAYE and receive Private Medical (the company pay for it). I have an excess of £100. Do I need to put it as a benefit ? I also get a phone allowance of £90 cash a month. I presume I do have to put that in?

Hi faisy,
If the medical benefit is not included in your payroll you should have received a form P11d from your employer at the tax year end showing the taxable benefit figure to enter on the tax return.
If the phone allowance is included in your wage then this would already be included in the P60 pay and tax figures.
If not in your wage again should be on the P11d form to declare as a taxable benefit  received.
Thank you.

Hi, Just to confirm as per the original question. If I have received a P11D with an amount in BOX I (i), that figure needs to be put in for a self assessment and is a taxable amount to be paid by me, the employee? I am aware of my Health benefit but it has not be brought to my attention that I would need to pay tax on it and was under the assumption that as it is a company benefit, all proceeds are paid and covered by the employer. I'm a little annoyed if it is, as I say, was not made aware of this detail. Thanks in advance.

Hi ,

If your Private Medical insurance is declared by P11D, this amount needs to be recorded in your tax return.

While your employer will cover the majority of the cost of this benefit, the agreement you make with
your employer is that you will pay the tax due.

To calculate the tax due, the full amount of the benefit is applied to your tax code - to ensure this reduction is reflected
in your available tax-free allowances when you file your Self Assessment tax return, the medical benefit is recorded in your return.

Thank you .
