I completed a paper tax return and received a tax calculation back. It gives an amount due by 31.1.24 which it says it will add to my "self assessment statement". But then it says this figure does not take account of previous payments, which presumably includes payments on account made in 2023. I have not received an updated SA300 and cannot access it online. I can't get through to the self-assessment line on the phone. Should I just pay the sum given on the tax calculation and hope that this is correct? If it turns out this is an overpayment, will I be refunded - and how soon? Or can I assume that I will be told when I need to pay - so since HMRC have not sent me a bill, I do not owe tax at this stage?
