Submitted tax return on paper in October. Have not received any message about it, including no self assessment tax bill. The website https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/guidance/Check-when-you-can-expect-a-reply-from-HMRC/outcome/paper-tax-return-submission says "You should have received a reply by 22 December 2023 What you can do next If you want an update on your claim or have not received a reply, you can contact HMRC (opens in new tab)." The "contact HMRC" option leads to a chatbot which does not answer the question (it recommended Universal Credit to me when I asked when I would receive my self assessment tax bill). If I do not receive the self assessment tax bill by the payment deadline of 31 Jan 2024, then what should I do? Is there a penalty if I pay as soon as I receive the tax bill but I receive it after 31 January? Or should I pay the amount on my submitted tax return?

Hi hays06625,
You would need to contact our Self Assesment helpline to obtain confirmation of the amount to pay:
Self Assessment: general enquiries
You can tell the chatbot you want to chat with a human and it will put you through to one of my colleagues.
The guidance here will give you the different option on how to pay the tax:
Pay your Self Assessment tax bill
Thank you.
