I am a 40pc tax payer and have been paying additional contributions to the company pension scheme since June 2023. I need to claim back 20pc tax relief by self assessment, but do I need to wait until after April 1st tax year or do i claim for 2023 contributions by Jan 1st?

Hi,

You will need to submit a claim for personal pension relief in writing, with a breakdown of each monthly payment along with supporting evidence.

Your tax code can them be updated to include an allowance for personal pension relief.

If you also need to complete a self assessment tax return, you would need to declare
the amount of pension relief on page TR4, box 1.

Thank you.
