I am trying to setup an HMRC online account for tax self-assessment but unable to setup one. I tried: i) Scanning my face to match my document. It did not work and I suspect it's the name order issue on my passport again. ii) Answering the credit questions but HMRC claimed I gave incorrect details. I have no clue which one was wrong Can you please help on this?

I have had the same problem. I have tried to set up an online account for my father in law. He has dementia and in a care home. His passport and driving licence have been out of date for years. Have tried online helpdesk/chatbot but keep going around in circles The chatbot tells me that it can't be done online and sends me to the helpdesk are which then sends me back to the bot. Was on hold for over an hour this afternoon when i eventually got through to someone who told me it couldn't be done without a passport etc. How can an account be set up?

Same problem, I'm trying to file self assesment (must conclude before 31st Jan) but after the identification process (only 5 attempts allowed before system locks me for 24h) getting "we cannot confirm who you are". No help from gov.uk website or calling hmrc. Have one last attempt and just 48h to go. How to get effective help please?

What a joke, standard response from HMRC to ‘Contact the Online Help desk’. Been there, done that, got the Tee shirt, got absolutely no where. My wife and have POA for my father in law. Surely there must be a system in place for Attorney’s to register on behalf of their loved ones. It’s an absute rubbish system they have. I have now received a paper Self Assessment to fill in which is actually for him to fill in and sign. There is nowhere for the Attorney to sign. Rubbish!!
